Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
Look, I’m not going to say that Paranormal Activity 2 is a bad movie. It’s fine, 5 out of 10. I just think it’s the start of a slippery slope for the franchise. The first Paranormal Activity–which I covered last week as part of Paranormal Octoberty, hi, gotta throw a plug for the event into every intro paragraph, yes–was a decent stand-alone horror film with hints at something larger. But 2 really starts to dive deep into the lore of Katie and her family, and it’s not always great. I mean, we’re not at time traveling witches yet, but I…

The Exorcist (1973)
I really hope you didn’t believe that I didn’t have a plan to fill out the 6 Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays left over after covering the 7 Paranormal Activity movies… The Exorcist and it’s 5(ish) sequels fit right into Paranormal Octoberty! Both franchises are about demons preying on humanity, but take different journeys on how that manifests. Plus it gives me a chance to review both a horror classic–this one–and also what a number of people argue is one of the worst horror movies ever made–Exorcist II: The Heretic. Is that really how I’m going to honor the recent death…

Paranormal Activity (2009)
Happy Halloween… month! It’s that time of year where the evils of living in a world where skeletons and pumpkins aren’t common decorations are exorcized from my body and I go from a shriveled, cobweb-covered husk of a man to a halfway functioning person; think King Theoden in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Anyway, it’s time for my annual horror event, and this year it’s Paranormal Octoberty, highlighting a month of ghosts and/or demonic possession. What, you thought I’d review something more mainstream like Halloween? Oh, you sweet summer child, why would I review that franchise in October?…

X-Men ’97 – Season 1, Episode 6
How we feelin’ after last episode? I for one am still a bit shaken, what with the major character death and large scale destruction! But on we must go with “Lifedeath – Part 2,” a sequel to episode 4’s “Lifedeath – Part 1.” It’s also an episode split in two, telling the story of what major characters are doing while a mutant nation burns. And for ease of reading, I’m just gonna separate the stories when summarizing them. Allons-y!

X-Men ’97 – Season 1, Episode 4
Whoops. Guess I’m not doing 5 posts this week. These posts take more time than you would expect and until I become a fully licensed wizard, I only have so many hours in a day. But this is the first episode of X-Men ’97 divided neatly into two stories and there’s not much extra research necessary for the first one, so that’s a bit easier. Let’s see if I can wrap this series up in time for the finale!

X-Men ’97 – Season 1, Episode 3
Clones certainly have their uses, don’t they? I for one had my clone write the first draft of this post for me, but had to scrap it all when I realized it was just “why was I made” and “end my suffering” written over and over like this was The Shining or something. But not all clones are complete failures! Take Jean’s clone in “Fire Made Flesh,” the third episode of X-Men ’97. Although it is a bit of a mystery as to which Jean is the real one… I mean, unless you’ve read the comics. They also tipped their…

Children of the Corn (2020)
I know, I know. I’m still on hiatus, but I had to make this post. Why? Because I am Captain Ahab and the Children of the Corn prequel/remake/reboot has been my white whale ever since it disappeared off the face of the goddamned Earth back in 2020, only to resurface recently. From hell’s heart I stab at thee! The last movie of this forsaken franchise has been seen!

Smile (2022)
You ever see a movie and just assume it’s not going to be good? Smile is all about creepy smiles! Oooh, I’m shaking in my boots… Plus, they showed what is most likely the best jumpscare in the trailer–if you know, you know–so what else is there? But I heard reviews were rather positive for this film. Was it actually worth watching? Or did it make me hate myself like that awful, awful movie Smiley? Writers call that a hook!

Hellraiser (2022)
Last year for October I watched all the Hellraiser films as part of The Hellbound Halloween. That’s 10 movies about Pinhead and his fellow cenobites, with a brief break near the end because holy shit they somehow got progressively worse as time went on. So when I heard that the long-awaited Hellraiser reboot was dropping in October, I knew I had to talk about it. And so here we are on a Saturday while the weekdays are taken up by October of the Living Dead.

Devour (2005)
Even with Movie Night taking a hiatus and then back with a relaxed schedule for a while, I still watch a lot of movies in a year. I don’t mean that so much as a brag, but as a defense in this case. Devour is a psychological horror film starring Mr. Jensen “Dean Winchester” Ackles, and its poster caught my eye enough that I put it on for Movie Night. Simple enough, right? Well, turns out we had watched it back in 2018 and none of us remembered a single detail about it. Not the best look!
