Slay (2024)
I’ve been real bad about keeping up with this blog, I know, I know… Blah blah busy at work blah blah excuses blah. But I wanted to at least get one entry in before Pride Month was over, and oh man did Tubi deliver a queer horror film. I don’t really do anything ironically any more so I’m completely sincere when I say it’s my favorite streaming site, full of good movies, hidden gems, and some of the best garbage to shove in my face.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
Have I really not seen this movie since it was in theaters? I feel like I may have watched The Last Jedi again since it came out seven years ago, but I’m not sure. Anyway, back in the Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back post I said that film was either my favorite or second favorite depending on my mood. The other option was The Last Jedi, and after having rewatched it for this blog, I think Empire is my favorite and this is a close second. It’s really good, but not perfect.

Hostel (2005)
As it turns out, there aren’t enough Saw movies to have every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in October dedicated to them. I’m left with three extra days during Saw-mhain, and you know what torture porn franchise has only three films? House of 1000 Corpses! And also Hostel, which is what we’re actually talking about today. And the first of the trilogy is… good? Better than expected, at least!

Smile (2022)
You ever see a movie and just assume it’s not going to be good? Smile is all about creepy smiles! Oooh, I’m shaking in my boots… Plus, they showed what is most likely the best jumpscare in the trailer–if you know, you know–so what else is there? But I heard reviews were rather positive for this film. Was it actually worth watching? Or did it make me hate myself like that awful, awful movie Smiley? Writers call that a hook!

Hellraiser (2022)
Last year for October I watched all the Hellraiser films as part of The Hellbound Halloween. That’s 10 movies about Pinhead and his fellow cenobites, with a brief break near the end because holy shit they somehow got progressively worse as time went on. So when I heard that the long-awaited Hellraiser reboot was dropping in October, I knew I had to talk about it. And so here we are on a Saturday while the weekdays are taken up by October of the Living Dead.

Day of the Dead (1985)
I think it’s fairly safe to assume most people haven’t seen the majority of the Night of the Living Dead sequels, Dawn of the Dead being the exception. That’s just kind of how it goes, right? Tell people the upcoming Hellraiser film is the 11th in the franchise and their eyes go wide. Even I haven’t seen most of these zombie films before watching them for October of the Living Dead. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Welcome to October of the Living Dead! In keeping with my tradition of devoting the spookiest month of the year to a film franchise–in 2020 it was October of the Corn and last year it was The Hellbound Halloween–this year I’m focusing on… Night of the Living Dead and Return of the Living Dead? Okay, sure. Those are closer to a top tier horror franchise than, say, any of the Children of the Corn films. And who knows, maybe by the end of this I’ll like zombies more!
