Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)
I feel like I don’t review enough older movies on this here blog. So far this year, I’ve reviewed 6 movies that came out before the year 2000, and four of those were from the 1990’s. Sure, these more recent movies are of a different quality compared to that of older films–both in production value and content–but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some amazing old movies! And Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is… okay, maybe not one of the greats, but it was a perfectly passable film!

National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)
It’s that time of year once again, dear readers! As my state begs people not to shoot off fireworks so soon after a record-breaking heatwave and at the start of what could be one of the worst fire seasons yet, it’s time to celebrate the Fourth of July! Last year I marked the occasion by watching National Treasure, so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that this year I’m looking at National Treasure: Book of Secrets. So without further ado, LET’S KIDNAP THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

Last Ferry (2019)
I’m starting this post with an aside. I live in in the Pacific Northwest in part due to its moderate weather. Well, it’s supposed to be 100° the day I’m writing this, and we’re on track for 110° on Monday, the day this goes live. So, uh, if I suddenly stop posting, it’s because I died of heat stroke.

The Empty Man (2020)
You know what I did recently? I had a friend over to my place… and neither of us wore our masks! Scandalous, I know. He was one of the Movie Night guys, and the fact that we haven’t had one of those in over a year is really getting to us. It was a thing we did every week for over a decade! But it was nice to have someone over watching a horror movie with me, even if we were as far apart as possible while not sitting on the floor. Anyway, we watched The Empty Man on his…

When They Cry – Season 1, Episodes 22 – 26
Here we finally are, the last arc in the first season of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, AKA When They Cry. Or is it series, since the next series/season has a different subtitle, title song, and end credits song? I’m honestly not sure, just like I’m honestly not sure what’s really going on in this series. But not necessarily in a bad way? That’s the intent, what with it being a mystery series and all, but damn, it would be nice to get some actual answers. Good thing this is a so-called answer arc! So let’s jump into Atonement and…

When They Cry, Season 1 – Episodes 16 – 21
The first four chapters in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, AKA When They Cry, are referred to as “question arcs.” I think it’s a great name because I have a whole bunch of questions as to what the fuck is going on. But now we’ve entered the so-called “answers arcs.” I went into the Eye Opening arc completely unprepared for what I was about to see and learn, thinking it was going to follow the pattern I had assumed was there based on the question arcs. Is every question answered? Absolutely not, but I learned enough new things that I…

Wer (2013)
Don’t you hate it when a movie gets spoiled by its trailer? I can’t even begin to count the number of films where I watched the trailer and thought, “Well that’s got to be 90% of the plot.” Which brings me to Wer, a movie that makes you wonder whether the antagonist is actually supernatural or not, while the trailer flat out says, yeah, he’s a werewolf.

When They Cry, Season 1 – Episodes 14 – 15
When we last left Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, AKA When They Cry, it was one of the more depressing things I’ve ever seen. Well, at least in anime form (but to be fair I haven’t seen Grave of the Fireflies). Satoko’s personal life is just a never-ending parade of misery, which makes her so far not dying at the end of these arcs (unless everyone in the town dies) sort of a mixed blessing. But the pattern of the show means this arc is about Rika, the other young girl who doesn’t deserve this shit. What kind of story…

When They Cry, Season 1 – Episodes 9 – 13
We’re back after a short break with more episodes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, AKA When They Cry. Last time was the Cotton Drifting arc, focusing on Mion and her surprise twin sister, Shion. Turns out Mion is the heir to the local yakuza and is in one way or another responsible for every death and disappearance associated with Oyashiro-sama’s curse. Oh, and she has a demon inside of her, which might be different from the reason the she and Rena were acting creepy during Spirited Away by the Demon. These next five episodes–the Curse Killing arc–focus on Satoko,…

When They Cry, Season 1 – Episodes 5 – 8
When we last left Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, AKA When They Cry, three of the five main characters were dead. Keiichi murdered Rena and Mion in self-defense, but the drug they injected him with made him rip out his own throat, eventually dying from blood loss. So… what now? Do we continue the story with the survivors, Rika and Satoko? Does detective Oishi take a main role in investigating the strange and possibly supernatural happenings at Hinamizawa? Nope! We’re going to pretend the first arc never happened! Let’s get weird and homicidal (again) as we look at the second…
