Slay (2024)

I’ve been real bad about keeping up with this blog, I know, I know… Blah blah busy at work blah blah excuses blah. But I wanted to at least get one entry in before Pride Month was over, and oh man did Tubi deliver a queer horror film. I don’t really do anything ironically any more so I’m completely sincere when I say it’s my favorite streaming site, full of good movies, hidden gems, and some of the best garbage to shove in my face.

Four drag queens–Mama Sue Flay (Ms. Trinity the Tuck), Robin Banks (Heidi N Closet), Bella Da Boys (Crystal Methyd, my favorite), and Olive Wood (Cara Melle)–have a scheduling snafu and end up doing a show in an aggressively straight bar in the middle of Bumfuck, Nowhere. Encouraged by queer fan Jax and the barowner, Dusty, who is oddly receptive, the queens’ performance is interrupted by a vampire attack. Man, this sounds kind of familiar… Oh, right! It’s like that foot fetish movie, From Dusk Till Dawn! That’s actually how Slay refers to that film, so… well done. What started as camp get better and/or worse when several characters we’ve grown to enjoy like living disaster Shiela and even Bella turn into vampires, but it turns out becoming one doesn’t make you evil? It just so happened that everyone who turned before them was just an asshole and embraced chaos. We even have touching moments like finding out Dusty is a little queer but had it beaten out of him as a kid by his father, so the queens give him an amazing drag glow-up for the final fight.

The movie is just stupid. But in the fun way! There’s a huge fight scene we don’t get to see; instead the characters stand in front of the camera and describe what they see, even going as far as to say if this was a movie, it would be one incredibly expensive scene. Look, I’m not the best at defining “camp,” but this feels campy as fuck and I love it for that.

So, uh… Happy Pride? I should do more, so I’m recommending Danny Blu as a queer artist. My current favorite songs are–in order from least intense to most–“Tidal Wave,” “Paradise City,” “Predator,” “Bad One,” and my favorite, “Violence.” Oh, and speaking of “Bad One,” special shout out to it for having the lyrics:

Good guys die, I’ll take Freddy, Mike, and Jay

(Fuck your dollar signs and I’ll fuck Pennywise)

Perfection. No notes. Seemingly made specifically for me. Now have a happy Pride!
